“Still a little bit of your song in my ear” Damien Rice, Cannonball

Wednesday, October 29th, 2003

So I like to think that I’m the hip ‘n happenin’ face of Wibblethorpe. Which is a bit sad really cos it causes me to do things like look at the human beat box site.

It’s quite a good laugh, however. I particularly recommend this for students in the library or those with desk jobs. Let me know how you get on…

Then there’s the Don of Beatboxers. Yes, it’s Killa Kela. This feller is off the hook…take a look at his site. This stuff is for real- in all honesty. Those beats? That tune? It’s all him. I saw the guy live at Brixton Academy and it’s amazing.

Or for something slightly more lyrical: how’s this for gorgeous poetry?

You may have heard of Damien Rice. If not I highly recommend you aquaint yourself with his work. It’s not unlike the stuff Aqualung and the like do. The album is full of lyrically scintillating songs with soaring vocals, to-die-for artistry on instrumentals and brilliant production (not to mention the extremely cool cover if that sort of thing does it for you). My personal favourite (mainly because Boyf put this on a mix CD for me just before we started going out) is

Cannonball.

Still a little bit of your taste in my mouth

Still a little bit of you laced with my doubt

Still a little hard to say what’s going on

Still a little bit of your ghost your witness

Still a little piece of your face I haven’t kissed

You step a little closer to me

Still I can’t see what’s going on

Stones taught me to fly

Love taught me to lie

Life taught me to die

So it’s not hard to fall

When you float like a cannonball

Still a little bit of your song in my ear

Still a little bit of your words I long to hear

You step a little closer each day

So close that I can’t see what’s going on

Stones taught me to fly

Love taught me to lie

Life taught me to die

So it’s not hard to fall

When you float like a cannon

Stones taught me to fly

Love taught me to cry

So come on courage!

Teach me to be shy

‘Cause it’s not hard to fall

And I don’t want to scare her

It’s not hard to fall

And I don’t wanna lose

It’s not hard to grow

When you know that you just don’t know

By the way- the album is titled “O”.

My inner child is sixteen years old today

My inner child is sixteen years old!

Life’s not fair! It’s never been fair, but while
adults might just accept that, I know
something’s gotta change. And it’s gonna
change, just as soon as I become an adult and
get some power of my own.

Well well well. No bulletin boards today. This puts quite a downer on my working day, I can tell you.

Now here’s a thing. I found this quote the other day:

He writes the worst English that I have ever encountered. It reminds me of a string of wet sponges; it reminds me of tattered washing on the line; it reminds me of stale bean soup, of college yells, of dogs barking idiotically through endless nights. It is so bad that a sort of grandeur creeps into it. It drags itself out of the dark abysm of pish and crawls insanely up the topmost pinnacle of posh. It is rumble and bumble. It is flap and doodle. It is balder and dash.”

H.L. Mencken (1880-1956), American journalist and critic, on Warren G. Harding (1865-1923), American president.

Is it just me or does this sound an awful lot like another President with a consonant for a middle name with whom we are all too familiar?

I had a strange dream last night. The Terminator came back through time, pregnant, with a short fat twin in a white suit and won the California State elections for a new, improved version of the current singing-supremo Governor Craig David.

Hmm.
